How to Have the Most Fun on the Intracoastal Waterway

One of the highlights of a Topsail, North Carolina beach vacation is being so close to the beautiful waters that surround our little barrier island. Nestled between the majestic Atlantic waters on the oceanside of the island and the tranquil soundside waters of the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) on the other, Topsail Island is truly a water lover’s paradise offering the best of both worlds where you can experience amazing inland and off-shore adventures.

Today, we’re putting a spotlight on the inland water adventures that await you on the ICW.

Get to know the Intracoastal waters near Topsail.

Let’s get to know a little more about the lay of the land and local waters, so you can get better acquainted this little piece of paradise on the North Carolina coast.

A Quick Topsail Island Geography Lesson

Topsail Island is one island in a chain of barrier islands located along the North Carolina coast,  midway between the mainland cities of Jacksonville, NC to the north and Wilmington, NC to the south. Topsail Island itself is situated in both Onslow and Pender counties and is home to the three seaside towns of North Topsail Beach, Surf City, and Topsail Beach with each providing a unique ambiance all its own.

Offering 26-miles of expansive shoreline, pristine beaches and a quintessential beach vacation experience, Topsail Island has quickly become a popular vacation destination for couples, families and beach lovers from all over.

It’s no wonder that Topsail Beach has recently been voted Best Little Beach Town in the USA by TripAdvisor, the world’s largest online travel site. Little Topsail Island is making a big splash on the beach scene, which is no surprise to those who know it best. It’s certainly not a secret anymore!

The Location of the  Intracoastal Waterway (ICW or ICWW)

The northeastern edge of Topsail Island is where you’ll find the New River Inlet, and the southwestern edge lies in the Topsail Inlet. The island is separated from the mainland by a series of small sounds and channels that make up a portion of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway.

The Intracoastal Waterway at-large is a 3,000-mile inland waterway along the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts of the United States, running from Massachusetts southward along the Atlantic Seaboard and around the southern tip of Florida, then following the Gulf Coast to Texas. The ICW is made up of natural inlets, saltwater rivers, bays and sounds, as well as artificial canals,  providing a navigable route for boaters along its length without many of the hazards of the open ocean waters.

Where to Access the ICW During Your Topsail Vacation

There are three public boat ramps on Topsail Island. If you want your own, then be sure to choose a soundside Topsail vacation rental that comes with stunning views and  instant access to the ICW anytime you want it. (More on that later in this post!)

  • North Topsail Beach: There is a boat ramp at the end of Shrimp Lady Lane under the high-rise bridge. The ramp is free, and there is plenty of parking.
  • Surf City: Public boat ramps are located at Soundside Park on 517 Roland Avenue right near the bridge.
  • Topsail Beach: The south end of the island also has a boat ramp offering access to the Intracoastal. The ramp, also known as Buch Marina, is located on South Anderson Boulevard just past Town Hall in downtown Topsail Beach and is set up as a self-pay, self-use ramp.

Plan your Intracoastal Waterway adventures.

Okay, your geography lesson is done and now it’s time for on-the-water fun! Your ICW adventures are only limited to your imagination because there are so many ways to enjoy the local soundside waters.

Cruising & Sightseeing

When it comes to cruising the local Topsail waters, we highly recommend The Belle of Topsail. It’s a 55-foot replica of an 1880’s turn of the century riverboat that cruises the scenic waters of the North Carolina Intracoastal waterway and sounds. Enjoy a lower salon or an open air deck on top with a terrific view of the island and the sounds. Experience the beauty of a North Carolina sunset from the waters aboard the scenic own riverboat. This peaceful, picturesque cruise along the waters of Topsail Island is the perfect ending to a hectic day, or it could be the beginning of an exciting night! Either way, it’s a quintessential Topsail cruising experience that’s guaranteed to please.

Topsail Tiki Tours is another local favorite. The Tiki Queen Paddlewheel takes you on a 2-hour nature and history tour along the Intracoastal Waterway and the back of Topsail Island. You’ll learn about the history of the island’s lookout towers, pirates and so much more. See the gorgeous waterway areas that only those with boats typically get to enjoy and along the way keep an eye out for Topsail Island’s spectacular wildlife including sea turtles, dolphins, ospreys and pelicans, just to name a few. They also offer sunset party cruises, shelling tours on a pontoon boat, and private charters.

Boating

If you brought your own boat to Topsail Island, then you can explore the local waters at your own pace and see the sights whenever you please. Savor the coastal beauty and make time to watch the breathtaking coastal sunset as it sinks slowly into the soundside horizon. Be sure to motor on over to the Breezeway Restaurant and Sears Landing where you can pull right up and dock for your dinner.

Guided Ecotours

Paddle your way along the island on a Topsail Ecotour either on a kayak or a stand-up paddleboard. Paddle NC offers personalized guided tours for all  ages and abilities on the calm, flat waters of the sound. Their tours leave from the sound side of Topsail’s Beach Access #2. The launch area is easy to use, and surrounding water is sheltered from wind and boat traffic for an relaxing, stress-free paddling adventure.

You can also take a guided ecotour by boat with an experienced local captain who can show you around and get you comfortable on the water. Topsail Boat Rentals and Lost Treasure Eco Tours are two great options.

Fishing

Fishing and Topsail Island go hand-in-hand. Spring and Fall are optimal fishing times but you can drop a line anytime you’re here. It’s especially easy to do when you choose a soundside Topsail rental with its own dock.

Alternatively, Soundside Park in Surf City offers public piers for your fishing pleasure. It’s also a great place for crabbing, too. Just don’t forget your NC fishing license!

Kayaking, Paddleboarding/SUP Rentals

The ICW waters just beckon for you to get out and explore them. Kayaking, paddleboarding and stand-up paddleboarding are best experienced on the calm soundside waters off Topsail Island.

If you didn’t bring your own water equipment, we have some awesome local sports outfitters that will take care of everything you need for your paddling adventures. 50 South Surf Shop and Herrings Outdoor Sports are two places to rent kayaks, paddleboards, find guided tours and more.

Jet Ski Rentals

Jet skiing is a fun and exhilarating on-the-water activity. A&B Saltwater Adventures can make your Topsail Island vacation extraordinary with the ride of a lifetime on their Yamaha jet skis (they also offer pontoons, our SUP boards and kayaks). Located at Bush Marina, A&B Saltwater Adventures is a family owned and operated business with more than 20 years of experience on the water. Explore Topsail Island from the beautiful waterways and see it for yourself.

Soundfront Topsail rentals offer the best access.

So with all of the ICW fun and adventure available to you on Topsail Island, now is the time to find the perfect rental for you and your family. Soundfront and soundside Topsail rentals are the way to go if you want ICW access that’s right outside your doorstep.

Need some help? Here are three Topsail rentals right on the Intracoastal Waterway that come equipped for adventure.

Perfectly Cool Treats You Need on a Hot Summer Day

Hot summer days call for cool, refreshing treats to munch on wherever you may be—on the beach, in your Topsail beach rental, or on the go. Today we’ve rounded up some of the easiest and tastiest foods to munch on this summer whether you’re at home or on vacation. These recipes are sure to please and there’s something for everyone and every palate. Best of all, they can all be made right in your Topsail vacation rental kitchen. Here are our favorite cool summer snacks and the recipes you need to make them.

Cool Homemade Dips

Cool Homemade Dips

Skip the store-bought dips and opt for a more delicious—and more healthy— version of your favorites. These yummy dips are packed with nutrient-dense ingredients that are filling while being kind to your waistline.

Serve them with raw veggie sticks (carrot, celery and even broccoli and cauliflower all work well), or cut up a wholemeal tortilla/slice of flatbread into ‘chips’ and lightly toast under the broiler for 5 minutes for a healthy alternative to the potato and corn variety.

Take a peek at these 7 delicious low fat dips and whip up a few this summer.

Cool Cucumber Slice Sandwiches

Cool Cucumber Slice Sandwiches

There’s nothing like the crisp coolness of a fresh cucumber. And summertime always offers up an abundance of these tasty, healthy snacks whether you have them in your own garden, buy them at the local farmers’ market, or pick some up at the grocery store.

So how about a cool, crisp cucumber sandwich?

Who needs bread when you can use slices of cuke. Brilliant, really. These snack-sized sandwiches can be filled with your favorite lunch meat and cheese and are sure to be a family favorite. Just remember that if you plan to make these little darlings ahead of time, to keep all of the elements separate until you’re ready to eat them so they don’t get soggy. The crunch is very necessary!

You don’t really need a recipe for this one, but here’s more about how best to make and enjoy these Sliced Cucumber Sandwiches.

Personal Veggie & Dip Cups

Personal Veggie & Dip Cups

Veggies and dip are nothing new, but novelty is the key ingredient here. Instead of a huge platter of raw vegetables with a community bowl of dip, try something a little different—personalized veggie and dip cups.

Kid-friendly crudite means that your family will be getting their fill of fresh vegetables without the fuss. Choose their favorite dip and a few of their most loved veggies (and sneak in a few new or unfamiliar ones) and put it all in a small, single-serving size cup. You can be fancy and choose glass or keep it simple and choose to use disposable ones (which is obviously the best choice for a beach snack).

You just might be amazed at how much your kids eat all thanks to the novelty of how it’s presented to them. Parenting win!

You can read more about these Personal Veggie & Dip Cups and how to make your own quick dip here, too.

Pioneer Woman’s Frozen Fruit Cups

Pioneer Woman’s Frozen Fruit Cups

The Pioneer Woman never steers you wrong! So it’s not surprise that her take on fruit cups is an absolute crowd pleaser. Everyone loves fruit cups anyway, but go ahead and take them up to another level of coolness (literally and figuratively) by serving them frozen.

They make a perfectly cool snack, a healthy summertime dessert, and even a refreshing breakfast alternative that is boldly colorful and wildly fun to eat.

You can find the Pioneer Woman’s Frozen Fruit Cup Recipe right here.

Frozen Fruit

Frozen Fruit

You know what they say: the simplest things are often the best things in life. This simple snack is cold, crunchy, satisfying and healthy. All you really need is fruit and a freezer, so it doesn’t get much easier than that.  The fruit lasts longer this way, too, and makes a quick, portable snack for your beach days or any day you’re on the go.

The technique is pretty straightforward.

  • If you’re using grapes, just pull them off the vine. If you’re using watermelon, pineapple or any other larger sized fruit, cut them into bite sized pieces. If you’re using berries, well, you don’t have to do much of anything other than rinse them.
  • Pop them in a zip-top bag with enough space so the fruit can lay in a single layer.
  • Throw the bag in the freezer, flattening it out so the fruit doesn’t stick to each other in a clump.
  • Freeze for 2 hours, or more.

You’re welcome! We were reminded of how simply delicious and totally refreshing frozen fruit can be from this Frozen Grapes snack idea.

Minty Cucumber Water

Minty Cucumber Water

It’s summertime so that means you should be drinking a lot of water anyway to stay hydrated on these hot, sunny beach days. Instead of plain old water, though, we recommend that you flavor it up a bit and make it even more refreshing—and much more flavorful.

Minty Cucumber Water is just what you need to keep cool and hydrated all summer long. Finely slice a small cucumber and add to a large jug of iced water or sparkling water. Add 1/2 cup of finely chopped mint leaves. The delicate flavor of cucumber seeps in, offering a refreshing alternative to plain water.

Frozen Yogurt Drops

Frozen Yogurt Drops

Maybe you’re old enough to remember those candy dots that came on sheets of wax paper, or maybe you’re not. Either way, these yogurt drops are reminiscent of that classic favorite, but happen to be a lot healthier. They definitely make for a fun beach vacation snack.

The kids are going to love eating these—and can help you make them, too.

All you need to do for these Frozen Yogurt Drops is mix together a cup of your favorite Greek yogurt with 2 tbsp honey. Divide between 3 bowls and add a different food coloring to each. Pour into a zip lock bag and snip a corner off. Pipe little drops of yogurt onto a lined baking tray and freeze until firm. Store in zip locks bags and store in the freezer to nibble on as required. Easy, fabulous, kid-friendly and family-approved!

Yogurt and Granola Trifle

Yogurt and Granola Trifle

Is it a breakfast or is it a dessert? We’ll leave it up to you to decide! It can go either way in our opinion, and it also makes a perfectly acceptable after-beach snack to help you cool down after a hot day on the sand.

In a small trifle bowl (that’s recommended, but you can even do it in individual servings if you prefer) layer the fruit, granola and yogurt in two layers, starting with the fruit on the bottom then granola followed by yogurt. Chill for fifteen minutes or up to a few hours, and then serve.

You can make your own granola pretty easily or just buy some readymade for convenience. Either way, you’ll want to try this Yogurt and Granola Trifle Recipe this summer.

Frozen Candy Bars

Frozen Candy Bars

Sure you’ve eaten candy bars. Who hasn’t? But have you ever tried a frozen candy bar? Well, you should. It’s a satisfying summer treat that only requires you to buy your favorite candy bar and put it in the freezer. The result is a cold, crunchy snack that is a nice juxtaposition to the usual chewy satisfaction of a room-temperature candy bar.

So go ahead and try it and see how you like it. If you’re interested, there are opinions on which candy bars are better eaten frozen.

No-Bake Cookie Dough Pops

No-Bake Cookie Dough Pops

Cookie dough on a stick? Oh yeah! We’re in! You also had us at “no bake”.

These cookie dough pops are a fun and tasty no-bake summer snack. They’re perfect for a vacation treat, for parties and other special occasions—and they make a fabulous addition to kids’ lunch boxes. The cookie dough is made with no eggs, so it’s perfectly safe to eat.

The pictured cookie dough pops above were coated with milk chocolate, white chocolate, and peanut butter candy melt coatings. Use your favorite coating flavors and colors, or use almond bark. Decorate the pops with sprinkles, more mini chocolate chips, finely chopped nuts, or colored sugars. The options are endless, really.

The additional non-food items you’ll need are pretty minimal:

  • 18 to 20 lollipop sticks
  • 1 square or round piece of styrofoam (for drying the lollipops)
You can find the complete No-Bake Cookie Dough Pops Recipe here.

Frozen Lemonade Pie

Frozen Lemonade Pie

What’s better than summertime lemonade? Frozen lemonade pie, of course.

This simple summertime lemonade pie is made with a 3-ingredient filling (yes, only three!) and a graham cracker crust. This version is made with sweetened condensed milk, but you can also make it with ice cream.

All you need to do is beat together the lemonade and condensed milk, fold in whipped topping, spread the mixture in the graham cracker pie crust, then cover and freeze. Take the pie out of the freezer about 15 minutes before serving time and you’re good to go. Super yum!

You can find the Refreshing Frozen Lemonade Pie Recipe here.

So, who’s hungry? And what are you making first? We hope you enjoy these cool treats! Let us know your favorite.

How to Buy the Perfect Beach House for You

There are a lot of factors to consider when searching for the perfect beach home for you and your family. You probably already have an idea of where you want to be, but after that—you’re not quite sure how best to proceed with finding the beach house that best suits your needs and wants. Let us help! Read up on these 8 beach house buying tips and then get started on turning your beach house dreams into a happy reality.

If you’re considering purchasing a coastal home or vacation rental in Topsail, North Carolina, Access Realty can help. We know and love this area and can give you the insider information you need along with all of the tools of the trade to help you find your Topsail beach house. We’re happy to help!

1. Rent before you buy.

One of the best ways to get to know an area before you commit to it full-time is by vacationing and spending some of your time in differing places near to where you are considering investing your time and money. Get to know what it’s like to stay on the ocean side, the sound side, and a few blocks in from the beach. From there, you may want to extend your stay by considering  a long-term rental to get a better feel for what it’s like to live there beyond just a week or two during your summer vacation.

On Topsail Island itself, you have three coastal towns to choose from so spending a little time in vacation rentals in North Topsail Beach, Surf City and Topsail Beach will give you a more intimate knowledge of these NC beach towns. If you can’t stay in each town, then be sure to spend a good amount of time exploring each of them—while also thinking about which one might be the best fit for you and your family.

2. Get to know the community.

The beautiful beach is one thing, but that’s only part of what you’re buying into. It’s worth your while to get to know the local communities and neighborhoods so you can make an informed decision. Scoping out the development plans, ecological and environmental issues, and other pertinent quality of life information is well worth your time and research.

Is the area family oriented? Are the communities safe? Are the neighborhoods geared more toward retirees or families with young kids? What are the advantages of living there? Are there any disadvantages?

Home ownership is a year-round commitment. You definitely want to know what the off-season months are like, along with the seasonal ones. Are you ready and willing to deal with the hustle and bustle of the beach season during the summer months? And are you happy with what the shoulder and off seasons have to offer you? These are really important questions to answer before you commit to buying.

3. Look for a home that fits your needs.

Of course you don’t want to break your budget, but you do need to know how many bedrooms and bathrooms you require for your family to be comfortable. Will you have family visiting and can you accommodate them? Exactly how much beach house can you reasonably afford?

Once you know that, you’re off to a good start. You’ll also need to be realistic about the maintenance and upkeep costs of a beach home and any renovations or special insurances you may need.

Are you going to use it as a second home? Vacation rental? Live there full-time? Whatever your intent, be sure it works with your budget and won’t strap you with too much financial strain and stress.

4. Consider homes a few blocks off the beach.

A beach house doesn’t always mean it has to be ocean front. Interior homes have many of the perks of an oceanfront beach home without the additional cost and with a little more protection from the coastal elements, making them a more affordable and budget-friendly option for many potential buyers.

It also costs more to insure homes that right on the water, whether it be the ocean or the sound. Know your costs before you commit and weigh whether that ocean view is worth the higher price tag.

5. Be conservative with your budget.

Unless you’re planning to buy a beach house free and clear, you’ll need a mortgage. If this is a second home or vacation rental, lending standards will be more strict considering you probably already own a home. If for some reason you would default on your payments, lenders will assume that you’d do that on your beach house first and not your primary residence.

The good news is that you’ll already have a good line of credit and higher credit score established. According to this article on BankRate.com, “Lenders are also looking for 6 to 12 months of payments banked. And they won’t include potential rental income in their calculations.”

Of course there will also be a downpayment, which is another expense you’ll have to be prepared to comfortably pay out. The standard is still around 20% down, but there may be lower options in the 5-10% range. Be sure to examine all the possibilities available to you.

The bottom line is that you don’t want to overextend yourself and your finances. Plan conservatively so that when unexpected expenses come up (and they usually do), you’ll be able to handle them.

6. Stay realistic about upkeep costs.

As any homeowner knows, the expenses don’t end with the downpayment and mortgage. There’s insurance and upkeep costs to maintain your coastal home, just as with any other home. Coastal homes are most susceptible to flooding and storm damage given their location, so special insurances are often required.

And then there are other considerations like storm shutters, generators, and other protective and proactive features that will be part of the expenses of owning a beach house.  Don’t be caught off-guard by these costs, but instead research and be prepared to factor them into your budget.

Finally, are you going to be able to keep up the maintenance and required upkeep for your beach house? Or will you have to hire someone to do it for you? You want to make sure you have the time and/or the money for either option.

7. Decide if it will be a vacation rental.

If you want to regain some of the money you spent buying your beach house, renting it out to vacationers is a popular option. That’s a factor you’ll want to weigh carefully before you buy because that means you’re not only buying a house that your family will love, but one that vacationers in the area will find attractive, also. Some properties are just better suited as vacation rentals than others.

Beach homes with more bedrooms and bathrooms are a draw for families and extended families who are looking for a vacation accommodation where everyone will have enough room to be comfortable, while all sharing the same space. Of course, the amenities your beach house has to offer are important too, since the vacation rental market can be pretty competitive.

If you are considering buying a beach house to use as a vacation rental, you’ll also have to decide if you will be managing all of that yourself or using a property management company to do it for you.

8. Consult the experts before you commit.

Before you sign on any dotted lines, you want to make sure you’ve consulted with the experts in the field to make sure you understand everything that’s required and what you’re committing to. From home inspectors to realtors, and everyone in between, you want to choose knowledgable and reputable professionals who have experience and expertise in coastal property in the area where you are looking to buy.

These professionals know the local laws, requirements and any special considerations specific to your potential beach house purchase. Don’t go it alone! You have to do your due diligence. It’s much easier to get help from those who already have the local knowledge and experience that you probably won’t yet have.

We hope you’ve found these beach home buying tips helpful! Did we miss anything? We want to know!

The Best Way To Protect Your Beach Vacation

You work hard for your well-earned vacation time. Shouldn’t you protect it? Yes, you should. As with any other financial investment of your time and money, it’s wise to be proactive and prepared for the “what-ifs” that may occur before, during, or after a vacation—and have a plan of action so you’re not caught off guard.

That’s where travel insurance comes in. Sometimes people are quick to dismiss it as unnecessary, but until you really know what’s offered—it’s best to consider your options and weigh them carefully.

Here are a few questions you’ll want to have answers to before deciding on whether or not travel insurance is right for you.

Why Travel Insurance?

First things first. Why should you consider buying travel insurance in the first place? Travel insurance is insurance. It’s put in place to help you financially (and otherwise) when stressful, unexpected situations arise. It’s simply a means of protecting your vacation from unseen circumstances.

Travel insurance is designed to protect those who elect coverage with financial safeguards in the case of events ranging from inconveniences to calamities. Coverage may include costs incurred before your trip, such as nonrefundable event tickets or your accommodation fees, and during your trip, including travel interruptions and medical expenses. Like other insurance products, there are specific provisions tied to these travel insurance policies that outline when and how reimbursements are given, and how much insured travelers are eligible to receive.

Buying travel insurance is a very personal decision, as every vacation is unique.

What Does It Cover?

Each travel insurance policy is different and has its own set of inclusions and exclusions, but most travel insurance policies include many commonalities. Before you review your travel insurance policy options, it’s best to first look at what and where you are already covered elsewhere. Credit card companies often offer you travel benefits so it’s good to know what kind of coverage you already may have. Know what your health insurance covers when you’re away from home. Check any benefits you may have from other groups or associations you belong to. From there, you can fill in the necessary gaps.

Here are a few of the major categories of protection most travel insurance policies provide:

  • Trip Cancellation Protection: This is the big one, and includes reimbursement for non-refundable trip payments and deposits.
  • Trip Interruption Protection: Sometimes trips start on time and end prematurely due to forces of nature and other circumstances beyond your control. This benefit includes reimbursement for unused costs and transportation costs to return home.
  • Travel Delay: Provides reimbursement for reasonable expenses incurred such as accommodations, meals, and local transportation if you are delayed during your trip due to a covered reason.
  • 24-Hour Hotline Assistance: While this doesn’t come with a dollar amount, getting real-time help when you’re in a pickle is priceless. This can include the arrangement of evacuations for medical emergencies, pre-trip assistance, etc.
  • Emergency Assistance and Transportation: If you or someone in your family gets sick or injured during your vacation, benefits that help you get where you need to go, whether to a hospital or back home, are invaluable.
  • Lost, Damaged, Stolen, or Delayed Luggage: If you’re flying to your vacation destination, these things are valid concerns. Lost or damaged bags at the airport is the #2 complaint issued to the Department of Transportation, so having this little added coverage can save you big headaches.
  • Travel Accidents: No one wants to think about these things when planning a vacation, but it is a potential risk and one that needs to be considered carefully.

Here are Access Realty, we offer travel insurance coverage through CSA Travel Protection. CSA Travel Protection, a Europ Assistance company, is dedicated to providing valuable travel insurance and emergency assistance services to protect travelers’ valuable investments and provide the peace of mind you deserve while traveling. CSA has developed a reputation for standing behind its customers and by offering products and services to meet their needs. All You Need to Know About Sea Turtles in Topsail

It’s that time of year again on the beach in Topsail Island, North Carolina. Sea turtle time! These cute and quirky reptiles of the sea are endlessly fascinating and absolutely adorable.

Let’s get to know them a little better and talk about what you can do to help during your Topsail beach vacation and where you can go to see them in action. There are also ways you can help the local sea turtle population right from your Topsail vacation rental, as well as on the beach and around town. Here’s what you need to know!

NC Sea Turtle Nesting & Hatching Season

In North Carolina, the nesting season is mid-May through August. The Loggerhead Sea Turtle comes ashore to nest 3 to 5 times during a nesting year. She deposits an average of 120 eggs per nest. The eggs incubate in the sand for about 60 days.

After all the hatchlings have pipped out of their eggs, they emerge from the nest together and race to the sea. Weighing in at about two ounces, their first challenge on our beach is escaping the deadly grasp of the ghost crabs. Once in the water they must hide from both bird and fish predators.

It is a long swim to maturity. It is estimated that 1 in 1000 survives the first year, and as few as 1 in 5,000 – 10,000 survive to adulthood. No one has the answer to this. In 20 to 30 years the surviving hatchlings will reach adulthood. The females will return to their natal beaches to lay their eggs and the cycle begins again.

Where You Can Help Topsail Sea Turtles

Topsail Island has 26 miles of barrier island coastline. Each mile is surveyed every morning to identify sea turtle tracks and nests from May through August. Hatching season usually runs from July through October on the beaches of Topsail Island.

Here are some of the the local places and people who are an integral part of the success of our local sea turtle population’s protection and advancement. They deserve your support!

Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue & Rehabilitation Center: This organization is dedicated to sea turtle care and rehabilitation and is staffed entirely by volunteers, so 100% of all donations go directly to the sea turtles that they treat. Since opening they have successfully rescued, rehabilitated, and released close to 400 sea turtles not counting the thousands of hatchlings who needed a bit of help. Like and follow them on the Topsail Sea Turtle Hospital Facebook page for the latest announcements and updates. Visiting hours at the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Center start up again for the season on April 5, 2018.

Salty Turtle Beer Company: The Salty Turtle Beer Company is all about being a neighborhood brewery. They have partnered with Karen Beasley’s Sea Turtle Hospital and other local organizations that give back to the community. When you support them with your patronage—you’re in turn supporting Topsail Island sea turtles, as a portion of the funds are given directly to the sea turtle hospital. Drink some beer and save some sea turtles all at the same time. Cheers to that! Find out more about who they are and what they offer on the Salty Turtle Beer Company’s Facebook page.

NC Sea Turtle Project and SeaTurtle.org: The NC Sea Turtle Project, run by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission’s Division of Wildlife Management, is committed to monitoring North Carolina’s sea turtle population. This project would not be possible without the help of hundreds of volunteers, as well as many organizations and agencies. They are an awesome sea turtle resource both locally and regionally.

More Ways to Help Sea Turtles

So what can you do to help while you’re here vacationing on Topsail beach and enjoying your Topsail Island vacation rental? A lot! Here are some more tips on how you can actively protect and preserve Topsail’s sea turtles during nesting and hatching season. We thank you in advance for helping!

Volunteer your time with a local sea turtle organization. If you stay on Topsail Island throughout the summer months, consider volunteering with a local sea turtle organization. The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Hospital has new volunteer orientation for 2018 on April 10th from 6-8:30p.m. and on April 17th 1- 3:30p.m. at the Surf City Welcome Center. You can find out more by emailing: topsailseaturtle@aol.com. You can also click here to find a local seaturtle.org volunteer group near you.

Minimize artificial light on the beach and in your Topsail oceanfront vacation rental. Nesting females are often scared away by flashlights, headlights, and fireworks. Although turtles are persistent and will attempt to nest either the same night or the next, too many false attempts at nesting will eventually require her to “dump” her eggs in the ocean. Eggs cannot develop underwater. Hatchlings also become disoriented by bright lights like walkway lights, or even inside lights or porch lights. They will attempt to cross over the dune and often end up tangled in vegetation or become easy prey once the sun begins to rise. Remember to turn off all porch lights when not in use at your Topsail oceanfront rental, and close the drapes so internal lights aren’t visible from the beach.

Remove recreational equipment from the beach. After your fun day at the beach, be sure to remove any furniture or toys from the beach, or try to stack them together as neatly as possible. Turtles have been known to get tangled up in beach chairs and tents as they make their way up the beach.

Remove all trash from the beach. Never litter, and do your part to pick up trash you see on the beach, in the park, or on the side of the road. Even when not near a beach, all litter has the potential of being carried by the wind and making its way into our waterways and onto our beaches. Turtles can mistake garbage as food, especially plastic bags and balloons, which look like jellyfish. Garbage in general degrades the health of the beach environment, making fewer suitable places for turtles to nest, feed and live.

Leave nesting female sea turtles undisturbed. If you come across a nesting female, or a female that is making her way up or down the beach, admire her from a distance. Movements, voices, and even strong smells (like cologne) could scare her away. Crouch down and stay very still. Even though turtles are rarely disturbed once they begin laying their eggs, it is best to keep your distance throughout the event. Give your eyes time to adjust to the darkness and you’ll be able to watch her without the need of flashlights.

Don’t leave holes in the sand. Large holes that are fun to dig should be filled in before nightfall. Not only have these holes been deadly traps for nesting females, they prove very dangerous for people walking on the beach at night as well.

Don’t disturb sea turtle nest markers. Areas that have been roped off or labeled as “off-limits” in order to protect the nest and hatchlings should be respected. Keep your dogs on leashes and make sure young children understand. Remember, sea turtles are protected under federal and state law and any activity that threatens that protection could be punishable.

Report any sea turtle activity. If you see any sea turtle activity, report it as soon as possible. The most important to report are sick or injured live turtles that need immediate care, and dead stranded turtles need to be tended to in a timely fashion. Call the NC Sea Turtle Project pager number at (252) 247-8117 and wait for a return call. Information on nesting females, turtle tracks, or hatching events is also greatly appreciated; call (252) 728-1528 or use the pager number. Sightings of sea turtles (assumed healthy turtles seen in the water) are also useful to biologists and can be reported by phone or email (252-728-1528, matt.godfrey@ncwildlife.org).

Two Wheels and Not a Care in the World

When is the last time you hopped on a bike and pedaled your way on a two-wheeled adventure? Do you remember back to when you were a kid and the feeling of absolute freedom that encompassed you once you were on that bicycle and not having a single care in the entire world?

You can experience that again, even as an adult—and Topsail Island, North Carolina is just the place to do it. Grab your bike and let’s go!

Best Places to Ride a Bicycle in Topsail

We’re highlighting a few of the best, but certainly not the only, places to ride your bike for a scenic tour of Topsail Island on two wheels. Try one or try them all during your Topsail beach vacation.

Topsail Island Bike Path

The Topsail Bike and Pedestrian Path begins at the Town Hall parking lot in North Topsail Beach and goes north on New River Inlet Road to the North Topsail Beach Park. The path is for bicycle and pedestrian traffic only, so you’re free to walk or ride without fear of other traffic. There is also a bike lane along Highway 210 which extends south from the intersection of 210 and Island Drive to the Surf City line for your biking pleasure.

Bicycling Around the Topsail Towns

Biking through the towns of North Topsail Beach, Surf City and Topsail Beach is a wonderful way to tour the island. Begin from a different starting point each day and pedal your way along the side streets to see where they lead you. All of Topsail Island has a bike-friendly mentality with lower speed limits than on the mainland. Spring and fall are the best seasons for riding with pleasant temperatures and less traffic than during the busier summer beach season.

Bicycling on the Beach

You may want to consider biking on the beach which offers incredible views and a really good leg workout. Choose low tide when you can ride near the shoreline where the sand is more compacted and easier to pedal through than the softer, deeper sand. Single-speed bikes work best on the beach, as do beach cruisers which have fat tires. Don’t forget to rinse the salt and sand off your bike when you’re done!

Bike Rentals on Topsail Island

No bikes? No problem! Topsail Island’s local shops have you covered from North Topsail Beach to Surf City to Topsail Beach. Don’t worry about lugging that extra equipment with you on your Topsail beach vacation and instead stop by one of these local sports outfitters to get your pedal on.

Topsail Island Beach Service, North Topsail Beach
